How I Pack for Formentera
By Carly Shea
Doris Kassubek is an Ibiza-based designer and the founder of A Peace of Ibiza Collection . Her collection of linen pieces, inspired by the island’s relaxed and easy-going environment, is exactly what we want to pack for a summer getaway. Every item is handmade by artisans on Ibiza, so you truly get to take a piece of it home with you, even if you’re dedicated to the carry-on-only lifestyle, like Doris herself. —C.S.
What‘s your go-to luggage?
I use a small rolling suitcase and a crossbody bag in brown leather from Joop. It’s a very strong, heavy leather and has a lot of compartments where things like my ipad and charger cables, passport and cosmetics all have their own place.
How do you approach the basics?
It depends where I go—in August I’m going to northern Germany, on the border of Denmark right by the Baltic Sea, and you never know what the weather will be like, so I’ll take some cashmere sweaters in different colors and also a thin rain jacket, which doesn’t take much space and I can always stash in my crossbody bag.
When I go to Formentera, my favorite island and where I lived for 3 years, I only take a small bag with a swimsuit, pareo, and some boyfriend shirts, like my favorite from my new collection, the DAYAMI boyfriend shirt in beautiful summer blue made from very light cotton with buttons from mother of pearl. I’ll also pack some drawstring linen trousers in oyster/white and ice blue, made from fine Belgian linen, also from my new collection. And I always pack some ribbed tops in white and grey from ARKET, which I wear under the open boyfriend shirt.
What‘s your shoe strategy?
On Formentera I wear espadrilles, not the flat and not the high ones. I have them in different colors and with multicolor stripes which are comfy and chic with linen trousers. And some cool-looking sneakers like the Adidas Tobacco ‘Flyfishing’. They are a great color that goes with my khaki linen trousers.
How do you think about accessories?
I always wear a heavy, short gold chain and alternate it with other longer and shorter chains, depending on the occasion. With my favorite linen dress (the FRESNO in khaki from my collection), I love to wear long gold chains from day to night.
What‘s always in your dopp kit/toiletry bag?
Going to the neighboring islands Formentera or Mallorca, I always fill my shampoo, shower gel and conditioner into small plastic bottles. I take my electric toothbrush and Q Tips. From ROWSE I always take the eye contour serum and the purify night serum. And I also pack the La Roche-Posay moisturizer with SPF30, the Avene fluid mineral tinted SPF 50, WELEDA sage deo spray, a lip balm from WELEDA with SPF50, and my daily contact lenses.
What‘s your pharmacy kit?
When I travel I always take my supplements in pill boxes—magnesium, zink, OPC (grapeseed extract) and a vitamin B complex.
Any wisdom on traveling with electronics?
I’m never without my iphone and fully charged ipad with some films downloaded. And my Bose noise canceling headphones are also very important.
Do you have a travel uniform?
Comfortable, loose fit trousers! I mostly wear my drawstring trousers in Belgian linen because they are perfect from spring to autumn. And always big sunglasses—whether vintage or new.
